Whispers of Autumn: Reflections on the Equinox, September 2024

Sunset glow over Santa Fe River

My belly was full with delicious carrot-pumpkin soup and kale-brussels sprouts salad. My heart was full with the vibrations from chanting and beautiful connections made with kindred spirits at an Equinox gathering. And on my way home, I glimpsed a pink sunset glow in the clouds and had to stop and get out of my car.

I took a quick detour to take a brief walk along the River Trail, just to be among all the yellows with the pink sky above. Though the aspens are only just beginning to turn, with only a few golden leaves here and there, the chamisas are in their full golden glory, and the crispness in the air was unmistakable. Ahhhh—what a gift, these first whispers of Autumn!

Today’s Autumn Equinox marks a moment of transition—equal day and night—a fleeting balance that reminds us to pause and take stock before we turn inward for the darker half of the year. I’m so glad I took that 20-minute pause. That I gave myself a solitary moment to integrate all the energies swirling around us at this time.

After all, we are shifting from the busyness of summer into the heart of the harvest season. It’s a time when the Universe asks us to consider what we've sown, what we’ve nurtured, and what we are ready to harvest. It’s a time of reaping the rewards of our efforts… but also of release—letting go of what no longer serves us. Much like the trees preparing to shed their leaves.

The Sun's opposition to Neptune at this Equinox emphasizes the delicate dance between seeing clearly and surrendering to the unknown. It reminds us that while we harvest the fruits of our labor, we must also trust in the cycles that carry us forward, even when the path ahead is foggy or uncertain.

Where in my life am I being invited to release control and allow things to unfold in their own time?

Venus at the final degree of Libra adds another layer—offering one last moment of balance and beauty before plunging into the depths of Scorpio’s transformative energy. The Venus-Pluto square happening at this time reminds us that transformation often comes with discomfort… but it’s through these moments that we have the potential to unearth our deepest truths.

What uncomfortable truths am I willing to face to bring about meaningful transformation in my relationships or values?

In this sacred in-between space, we are invited to reflect on both what we are harvesting and what we are ready to compost.

How can we embrace this seasonal shift with grace, accepting both the beauty and the decay that comes with it?

Just some of my riverside musings and reflections at this time of transition. Happy Autumn Equinox!
